They are sent to prison to separate from them from society because they treaten the public's safety. To punish them by taking away rights and freedom. To show other people that crime does not pay. To convince them to change their criminal ways and return to society as law-abiding citizen

If for no other reason, to remove them from society for a while, because they disrupt society when they are in it. Some get tired of jail or prison and stop their behavior but even if that doesn't happen, then at least they are not hurting people on the outside while they're incarcerated.

To protect society. There are many schools of thought. One is deterrence, which means if people know they will go to jail for committing crimes, they won't commit crimes.
Another is retribution. That is basically the judicial systems way of making someone repay a debt to society by restricting his or her civil liberties.
