Providing shell was crushed but snail was miraculously intact- can they live without the shell, like born-again slugs, or do they die?

Of course this question belongs in the religious category- if you were a snail and you saw a heaving great boot coming down towards you, you'd start praying!!!

they are extremely vulnerable without their shell so they could easily die

Unfortunately they die, I love snails but hate slugs! Asking that question, when you think about it from another angle, is like asking "If I see one of those human thingies, could I rip out his bones and he would survive like a giant eel?" Admittedly I don't know if we could survive without our bones so this may be a silly analogy! I'm guessing we can't though!

no they die as all their protection has been knocked out, their flesh is not hardy enough to withstand living outside of the shell
