i do not like the phrase at all....i for one do not want to sell anything to the devil...i believe in god and i want to go there when i die....we all sin but i sure try not to....

Personally I believe the phrase would have different conotations throughout time.
One possible interpretation is the idea that at points people have commited 'sins' to gain wealth and position, at this point crossing 'God' to gain what they desire.

The phrase is plain stupid. you can not sell something you don't own.Hopefully your soul is going to God, If not you gave it to Satan you did not sell it.
