yes you have to cut off the ends, the best way to cook them is to make an x on the bottom, the stem end, and simmer them until they are tender. then you can toss them with butter/olive oil and salt and pepper and enjoy these wonderful little plants.

Cut off the ends (you only eat the part that looks like a tiny little cabbage), put a little bit of water in the bottom of a microwaveable dish, cover with Saran Wrap and cook - can't tell you how long to zap without knowing how much you're making but steamed is the absolute best way to prepare Brussels Sprouts (Warning: as they are part of the cabbage family, your kitchen may stink a bit!)

You have to cut off the stalk and just eat the actual sprout. I prefer steaming them and add a little garlic and butter. You can also sorta blanch them in a little water until the are soft enough to eat.

Buy them frozen and add alot of sugar to the water while they are boiling. drain and add some butter.
I began doing this years ago and every one of my kids eats brussel sprouts.
The sugar takes the bitterness out of the sprout.
Using fresh is great but takes a bit longer than the frozen.

I usually trim the stalky bit, peel off any nasty outer-leaves, and boil in salted water until they're tender and firm (not mushy).
