My kitten age 5 months loves roast beef, chicken, salmon, cheese. I cook all of these foods for him. I know some people recommend raw foods, but I'm worried about bacteria from it.

Should he be eating commercial wet food instead and if so, what is the best kitten wet food. I'm finding it hard to get it and when I do it's so expensive that's why I give him the above food that I cook. He also gets dry food to which I'm learning what brands to buy thanks to all of your suggestions.

Unfortunately when you cook the meats you mention you destroy the taurine in the meat and taurine is vital for the kitten's eye and heart health. Cats will go blind or die from heart failure very young if they don't have it.

I have fed my cats a raw meat diet for seven years. I use ground chicken and ground turkey, certified organic with no hormones or antibiotics. The meat is $5.00 a pound and I get it at a small market so it is never packaged and I know the butchers clean the grinders well and only grind the meat when the demand is there. I use a supplement powder to supply calcium and other nutrients. I also add a salmon oil capsule to the meat.

Humans should not eat uncooked ground meat because we have very long intestinal tracts - a perfect breeding environment for a little salmonella or e coli to take off and multiply like crazy.
Cats have short intestinal tracts and also stronger stomach acids to digest their food. You may have seen pictures of the leopards taking their prey into the trees and eating it for three or four days in the intense African heat. They don't suffer from bacterial infections!

You really should join the Yahoo group Holisticat. There are recipes for raw diets in the archives and many people there do a raw diet and would be happy to answer any questions you have and share their experiences with feeding cats this way.

My kitten liked Kitten Chow a lot. What I used to do, is mix a small can of inexpensive wet-food with the Kitten Chow. (It's got real cat milk in it). She really liked that. She's 1 1/2 yrs old now & she eats Indoor Formula hard food mostly now.

your best bet would be to try a product called Wellness, they have both dry and canned food, it is a high quality pet food. or you can try Natural Balance, they too have both dry and canned food. it is really best to stick with a good premium cat/kitten food as kittens especially need the proper amount of nutrition including taurine which is essential. good luck to you and your new kitty.

YOU SHOULD BE GIVING HIM IAMS KITTEN CHOW NOT HUMAN FOOD BECAUSE HEY CAN GET VERY SICK FROME HUMAN FOOOD ESPECALY SALMON. S OYOU SHOULD START HIM ON IAMS KITTEN CHOW IT IS IN A PUTPLE , YELLOWISH BAG AND IT IS ABOUT 5 OR 10 BUCKS. AT FIVE MONTHES YOU SHOULD NOT BE FEEDING HIM WET FOOD ANY MORE . IT IS JUST A BIGGERR BILL FOR YOU TO PAY IN THE LONG RUN. I MEAN IT IS OK FOR YOU TO GIVE IT TO HIM ONCE IN A WHILE BUT HE SHOULD BE EATTING SOLID KITTEN FOOD ONLY NOW HUMAN FOOD WHAT SO EVER IT CAN KILL THEM. IF HE GETS TO FAT HE COULD DEVELOP DIEBEATYS AND COULD GET VERY SICK ....BUT DO WHAT EVER YOU WANT.. HOPE I COULD HELP..

I feed my kitten Evo hard food and she loves it. its a natural food that isn't as expensive as others. a little raw meat isnt as bad as you think if your really scared of bacteria try going to a healthfood store and asking them for their opinion on what raw meat is best.
i use meat that has been shipped from an amish farm. They arent as keen on the idea of hormones in their live stock.

Good commercial wet food is very expensive. Friskies is cheaper but not good for them. They like it because there is something inside to make cats love it, but please don't use it! You can find good food like Eukanuba or Iams. I know it's more expensive but so better for them. I have some friends who had really bad experience with cheap food. And you gave him so good hand-made food, he could be really sick if you change to fast. Try the first week to give hime half and half, and slowly a hundred percent of commercial food. Forget friskies and whiskas, please!!

what u feed him is fine except maybe the cheese. u might want to try tuna and eggs also. i find it hard to believe that can cat food is more expensive than people food. but if u can afford it , fine. don't give it raw food, for ur reason, and if u still have doubts, call a vet.

Iams kitten dry food and Iams canned kitten food. You should not be feeding your kitten so much human food. You can confirm this with any vet!
