After washing, use a scrunching product (I like Redken's scrunching spray) and spray liberally. Now use a defuser (blowdryer with wide end) while you grab your hair and crumple it like a piece of paper to throw away.

My hair is really curly and wavy too so hopefully i can help you out :-)
This is exactly what i do:
At the end of my shower before i get out, while my hair is still sopping wet, i put my hair upside down and shake my head like a dog. I finger-comb it just a little bit while my head is still upside down and then scrunch it to get some water out. (Scrunching is as simple as grabbing a section of your hair and squeezing it close to your head. The ends of your hair should be touching your palm as you make a fist). I get out of the shower and scrunch it more with my towel, do get more access water out. Next, you can use gel our mousse; gel will give a more defined curl, and is usually more crunchy than mousse. I usually prefer mousse, unless its really humid outside, and ive recently found the new herbal essence curl defining mousse to work very well. Anyways, scrunch some mousse in there. I usually do this with my head upside down and start with some in the front, each side, back, and then flip my head up to put some in the strands that grow from the crown of my head. Next, i spray hair spray on all over my hair, in the same steps i moussed em, all the while still scrunching as i spray. Next, get a blowdryer with a diffuser attachment. This will help so that your hair wont just get blown into a frizzy mess. The diffuser gently dries the hair without just blowing it everywhere, without control. I dry it the same way i mousse it: head upside down, start with the front, then the sides, then the back. I usually dont dry one whole section completely, but dry it well and then come back to it. After all sections feel dry, i flip my head back up and spray it with hair spray like before.
Unfortunetly, this will take practice. It will get annoying, but youll find what works for you. Dont be afraid to try new things. That is the only way you will learn anything. Trust me.

When you get out of the shower, squeeze out the excess water from your hair. With your head upside-down, apply gel and scrunch it with your hands. Doing this upside-down will make the curls look more natural. Then blow-dry with a diffuser.

Grab a bottle of conditioning mousse or atleast one w/out alcohol or a wave moisturizing product (i.e. Wave Nouveau Finishing Lotion or Matrix Curl.life Contouring Milk) and and apply moderately all over. Than flip over your hair and grab and ball the hair upward. What you are trying to do is crumple up your hair toward your roots making it more like a slinky (for a lack of a better word).

I have think and wavy hair too. i start by putting my hair in a half pony tail and the use a clip to the dangley part from the rest. then i put gel in my hair than grab a chunk and squish it. then you blow dry it and then put super hairspray in your squished part of your hair.then grab another chunk and do the same. when you are done with the bottom putit in a slacking pony tail and undo the half pony tail and do the same as the bottom. when done undo your slaking pony tail and fluff your hair. GOOD LUCK!
