Like beer, wine was of the beverages that could safely be drunk, in times when potable water was only for the happy few. In the Mediterranean countries, sometimes children of about 12 years old, at dinner get also a (very) small amount of wine. The idea behind it is that they from a young age learn to appreciate this centuries old fermented beverage. Also to be responsible with alcohol. Supposedly it helps to avoid really heavy alcoholic distilled drinks like rum, and whiskey later in their life.
II suppose that's why Italians, but also the Portuguese, Spanish, French, etc. drink so much wine. (Besides that it is healthy in moderate quantities, especially red wine, and that it's just tasty!)
Santé!
