With Meccano you can actually learn a lot about real engineering. You can build motor chassis, gearboxes, differentials, cranes with proper rails and running trolleys, locomotives with working pistons and Walschaerts valve gear, and so on. It's miles and miles ahead of Lego for that sort of thing, and the models don't pop apart under a load.

But it's expensive, and it takes a lot of patience to build things that work, so for most children who are brought up to have practically no patience nowadays, it's no longer a popular toy. However, some of the modern Meccano kits are easier to put together than the older-style Meccano of the 70's and 80's.

I actually think Lego is better for the imagination because it can be constructed into something you are thinking of quite quickly and with a relatively low level of skill. Mechano on the other hand requires quite a bit of skill to make something that comes close to what you are thinking of, but even then it requires some imagination to "fill-in" the details.

From a mechanical point of view, Mechano is more "real-world" as the way most mechanical products are design and constructed is with nuts and bolts, but for a growing mind with a wild imagination I still think that Lego better.

Lego world is quite a "processed-world"...like getting sliced cheese instead of a cheese block. It is easier to work with. Especially now days with so many specialized parts.

I hope this is useful.

Ron

Lego by far is more entertaining and interesting. However, a good mechano design can look very cool.

Definitely Lego! You could do so much more with it than with Mechano.

They're different, so it's a matter of preferrence.

Lego has more variety and now includes parts that are not strictly building blocks as well as robotic controllers, motors and sensors.

However, Meccano does give you experience in using nuts and bolts and other types of fasteners.
