Originally, they used South Africa as a fueling station on their way around Africa to the East. Thus, the Dutch East India Company began a foothold there in Africa. Later, Africa was the place where the ships from New England stopped off to pick up and capture blacks to become slaves in the southern plantations.

The white man left his continent because he was curious and wanted to see what was on the other side of the mountain. :) Now seriously, in my case, the white man went to Africa to get more workers as the ones in my country were dying from being over worked.

The white man I speak of is Christopher Columbus and the Country is Cuba. The Africans were brought to Cuba to take the place of those that were slowly dying in the sugarcane fields. I am a firm believer that every action has a reaction. Every action that man takes is not always a positive one, but we most try to find a positive factor. In my case, due to the white man making that move, I find joy in knowing that Cuba is a blend of three beautiful races and we embrace all of them. We are a blend of Indian (Cuban Indies) Black (Africans) and White(Spaniards). My mother is Indian and Black and my father was a blue eye Spaniard. Out of that union came olive skin that now has produced my children with green and brown eyes respectively. So you see the beautiful races? That is what I chose to dwell on instead of the negative. Now it is up to you to find some positive out of your own question.

Are you asking about the English, Dutch or who.??? Maybe cause it was there and found an excuse to go. The settlers looking for a place to work and raise a family, to have a piece of land to farm, and live. They saw Africa as an opportunity to have a better life. Suspect there were as many different reasons as there were different people.

I wish the white man would have stayed in his own continent also, we would have had much less trouble over the years. But I feel sorry for the blacks that are their now, all they have is war, starvation and genocide, year after year, their is always trouble their.

Originally, for trade not people but goods/materials (thru the middlemen-peoples of the MidEast probably via caravans). Prior to the arrival of the Europeans, Africa already had a slave system but one that is not like the form that was brought about in the U.S. Their system was originally based really close, in terms of freedom and treatment, to indentured servants.

Initially? Exploration. But I think you're asking about slavery, huh? Well, Africans sold other Africans to the "White man." (that bastard.) So ***** to the Africans for having slave-dealing ancestors, I'm tired of hearing about it.
