The bottom line is to believe in one God, a God that has no equals an any way shape or form. Also, you have to accept that the Prophet Mohamed (pbuh) is the messenger of God and nothing more, you give him the utmost respect but you do not worship him at all. God is the English translation of Allah, and most Muslims will refer to God as Allah as the Quran is written in the Arabic language as well as the prayers.
This belief is in the prayer, the first Kalimah, Kalimah Taiyyab, Declaration of Faith,
Laa ilaaha illa-llahoo Muhammadur-Rasool-ullah
There Is no diety except Allah. Muhammad (pbuh) is the Messenger of Allah
If you believe this then you are a Muslim.

Quick note about openminded's answer. He himself has said he does not know anything about Islam therefore how can he be able to say what he has said? He needs to do his homework, and change his name to something else.

If Muhammad was a follower of Allah, then what sort of God is this Allah?
Certainly a different God than that of the Old and New Testament.
Look at the life and example of Jesus. Then look at the life and example of Muhammad, and you will know that this is not the same God.
Which God should you believe in?
The One that so loved the world that He gave His only Son as a sacrifice for the salvation of all mankind. All other gods and their prophets are imposters and by their fruits you shall know them.

Well, if you don't believe in allah, then you're clearly gaining common sense.
All gods are made in man's image ie. created by the inventor(s) of each religion. Each successful religion rises from a few followers to a country/continent/planet girdling community and then slowly dies away again to give way to the next charlatan to jump on the bandwagon. They eventually end up on the intellectual scrap heap where they remain for many centuries until the historians start to examine them as quaint practices of primitive people.

No! you do not have the right to call yourself Muslim unless you follow the teachings and the Pillars of Islam, eg Pray 5 times a day, give to charity etc.
