I know I sound like a big baby but here is my problem.
I've been sick for over a week and it seems to be getting worse. My boyfriend has been wanting to take me to the hospital, his mother is a nurse and thinks that what I have is pneumonia. I'm asthmatic and I know the two do not mix well. The big thing here is I've been told that I'll probably get a penicillin shot which I heard really hurt. I'm a serious needle phobic. They'll most likely draw blood and give me an IV and I don't want to go but I know I have to. Has anyone gone to the hospital with pneumonia and what happened.
Be honest, I want to know ahead of time, how many times will they stick me??????

Don't get so worried over it, it's really not a big deal. I had pneumonia as a small child and handled it very well.

Well with pneumonia you will be stuck. They will draw blood for the lab work and yes you'll more than likely get an IV and a shot of PCN(penicillin). A few sticks with a needle compared to suffocating to death is but a small thing. To suffocate to death is far more painful. I suggest you go to the hospital and ASAP. Being asthmatic puts you at higher risk of complications. Get going sweetheart. You'll be glad you did.

I'm sorry to hear that you're sick.

However, would you rather DIE or have a couple needle stings for about 2-3 seconds?

Depending on how bad your pneumonia is.. which probably isnt TOO bad since you're home on the computer.. you will most likely be put on antibiotics. Which I'm guessing in your case will just be PILLS. You might get a chest x-ray. I don't really think you will need blood work done.

I have a friend who is very afraid of needles. She gets hysterical. When she needs a shot she will take a friend with her and she will close her eyes and not look at the needle. She said this helps a lot. You can take your boyfriend. Close your eyes. Have him talk to you to help take your mind off of it. Asthma and Pneumonia can be deadly. A few seconds of pain and its over and you live. Don't risk your life, go to the hospital and get treatment. It will only get worse if you don't. Good luck sweetie!

Can you ask for a sedative or to be "put under" temporarily while they do the blood work? If it's pneumonia complicated by asthma, you really need to take care of this. Ask to speak to a patient care advocate at the hospital and describe your concerns. Ask her/him what can be done to facilitate your fears so that you can get appropriate treatment...

Calm down.

You need to go. They will do an xray of your chest to determine if you have pneumonia. With your asthma you HAVE to go. You may not be stuck with anything. Pneumonia is usually viral and won't respond to antibiotics. They just need to make sure your breathing is ok. They may give you a Nebulyzer treatment.

i have never had this issue but i do know the longer you wait to take care of any health problem the worse it always gets. go to your local doctor if your scared of the hospital, maybe the doctor could give you a power full antibiotic. hope you get better soon. dont wait.
