It's when you are not just sad for a few days because something bad happened, but down for a longer period of time. Mostly there is no one particular reason causing it, you are just generally depressed, feeling bad. Things seem bad without much hope of getting better.

That's depression and it can be treated by medication and counseling. One or the other may help, but it's best to get both.

Feelings of sadness,
Feelings of worthlessness,
Low Energy,
Lack of interest in the things you used to enjoy,
Wanting to be alone
Thoughts about death
Loss of appetite,
Eating too much.
These are not all the symptoms, and some depressed people only have a couple of these. See a psychologist. If you have insurance, it will probably be covered.
