I let an old co-worker move in to my apt. last week and have noticed unsettling things. Before I list them, I haven't collected rent (they're unaware of the rent cycle), and am uncertain how to proceed before collecting.

Smokes inside (my NO rule, against building code)
Clothes/belongings reek of cig smoke(cheap cigs stink more!)
Don't think I've EVER seen/heard shower run(no damp towels anywhere, shower is dry when I look at it)
Needed a lift, their significant other seemed 'bothered' to help ("hey I'm giving them a place to stay!)
Informed me that altercations have occurred(I lived here 1st, I'll probably be here after their gone, why do that?)

Any tips/suggestions/hints, how can I stop this 'snowball' before it becomes an avalanche?

Adding some clarifications;
I was the one who needed a lift
As for 'Nate' telling me to mind my own buisiness, my take is, it's almost winter, windows will end up shut, I don't want stink.

Go over the rules about not smoking in the building. Tell them to go outside or you will get in trouble and let them know that you do not want that in your home. Then get a newspaper and help them look for places to rent. Take them or offer to take them to look at these places. This will help them get the point that you do not wish to have them stay long. Then tell them that you are sorry, but that they can not stay for more than a month. Tell the person that you wish you could help more, but that is the most that you can do.

Reiterate the rules about smoking, and if they continue to do so, hoof them out.

My frined's mum has a problem lodger who keeps using her towels, and she has been advised to get rid of this man. First take comfort in the fact this isn't the case for you. It doesn't matter about the tenant not showering, as long as their personal hygeine is not beyond reproach. If so, then you have more grounds in which to give this tenant a month or so's notice and get him out.

Dude, it has already snowballed. You have the roommates from hell and you need to be the one to nip it in the bud. Tell them what you are unhappy w/. Harrange them for their share of not only the rent, but also utilities and food. Not to mention them paying a part of the deposit that you will undoubtably loose b/c of the cigarette problem. Cut them loose. Change the locks.

No you are not too quick to judge. If your co-work is a female they don't clean. They don't shower. They don't pay rent.

You might be a lucky bastard finding a low life, horny wanna be.

Then again I don't understand the several times you mentioned "they". Get pics.

Set a time limit for this person to live with you. And make it short.. Enforce your boundaries and re-direct him/her if they inappropriately start expecting you to pick up the "slack" in their life (needing a lift, etc.). This person sounds very needy and dependent...Beware!

Just talk to them like an adult. Let he/she know that you don't want smoking in the apartment. As far as showering goes, mind your own business.
