First, congratulations on your birthday!

I like the advice from the person who told you to fire 500 rounds - However, unless you are using the weapon for competition shooting, I think you are better off getting a small, easily concealable weapon that fits in your pocket, or under your belt in a holster, for self defense. Then, once you choose a weapon that feels good in your hand, fire the 500 rounds or more until you feel absolutely comfortable with it.

Colt makes an excellent .380, the Mustang. That's what I carry when necessary. Totally dependable.

The Walther PPK is also dependable.

My daughter carries a Beretta .25. That will get the job done also.

Think about the practical aspects - just how much weight do you want to carry around? What are you going to use this weapon for? What is the proper weapon for the job? How much maintenance do you want to mess with?

A stainless steel pistol is easier to maintain - get one with a brushed finish instead of a mirror finish. Learn to keep it clean.

Take an NRA course - learn to operate the weapon safely so you don't hurt yourself or someone unintentionally. Also, learn to hit exactly what you are aiming for [think "belt buckle"].

Happy Birthday !

Mace/pepper spray foam. Is it extra valuable than a gun? probaly not. in spite of the fact which you would be able to hold it everywhere, minus the airport. it is small low priced and mild-weight. Plus you do not must be concerned approximately each and every of the BS rules approximately the place and the place not you are able to hold a pistol. Nor do you ought to be concerned a pair of bighead Cop harrassing you. i've got have been given a carry enable and diverse pistols from .22 Walther all they thank you to a custom .40 5 1911. Used to caryy the Walther around in spite of the fact that it replaced right into a complication with colleges. BTW you are able to not actually have a gun in a motor vehicle interior a school zone ie the same old public highway passing a school!

You have to go to a firing range and try several. That's the only way to choose a gun and learn how to use it.
The size of the gun must compare to the size of your hands, otherwise you will not be comfortable using it and wont be able to hit a barn door from 5 paces.
Shoot at least 500 rounds before you even think of carrying it. I mean of course 500 aimed shots which hit the target.
My favourite is a Chech CZ-75. 9mm, 15 rounds. About 2 kilos loaded (4 pounds)

Also, make up your mind. Do you need it?
And if so, would you rather be judged by 12 strangers, or carried by 6 friends?

Check out the Springfield Armory EMP, (http://www.springfield-armory.com/index.shtml) . This is a very small 1911 type that is chambered for 9mm. I believe they are planning on bringing it out in .40 S&W and .45 G.A.P. also. Springfield Armory makes other small 1911's in .45 A.C.P. Kimber (http://www.kimberamerica.com/index2.php) makes some small 1911's also that are of very high quality. Hold as many in your hand as possible and see how they feel. See how the sights line up for you. Try to shoot them before you buy if you can. Good luck and good shooting!

You can't go wrong with a S&W (smith & wesson) airweight. Chambered in .357mag which means it will pack a huge punch, and the gun is lighter than a can of soda.

Do you intend to use it for target practice or just for the novelty, if the latter then why not buy a deactivated gun?

I can't give you any recommendations thanks to Tony Blair (he banned them here, grrrr!)
