Prime rib is a whole ribeye roast. Not, however, the kind you can get from your local supermarket butcher shop. You would need to special order one ahead of time. USDA Prime, preferably Black Angus, and you're gonnas have a great piece of meat. A choice ribeye roast will work, but not give as good a result.
My Favorite way to cook one is to coat it with seasoned flour (usually add Kosher salt, fresh cracked pepper, garlic powder) and put it in a 500 degree oven for one hour. Then shut off the heat, but (and this is very important) DO NOT OPEN THE DOOR UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, for at least one hour.
The roast will continue to cook in the oven, resulting in a very nice medium rare throughout. Make an au jus (many recipes on the net). After letting the Prime rest for 30 minutes after takeing it out of the oven, slice, and of you want your meat more cooked, immerse it in the au jus, (which you should have on low on the stove) and let it cook to your desired doneness.

Well, you should be more specific. There are bone-in, and boneless. And there are inside rounds which come from lower on the cow, and lip-ons which mean they left a layer of fat. Those are the best.

the kind I would love to have for dinner, really bone in or out and be very careful not to overcook it, or you payed a lot for dog food, and really it is the kind maybe someone else should be doing the cooking on
