I think my dachshund has an ear infection, but I'm not able to take her to the vet for a couple of weeks to be sure. She shakes her head and body regularly like as if she just got out of a pool, but it's at random times. My dad tried putting penicillin in her ears to help her a bit. With one ear, she was calm, but when he got to other ear, she went berserk. Does this sound like an ear infection? What can I do to help her until I can take her to the vet.

If you really can't afford to take her to the vet, at least try to call around and find one who will let you pay a little at a time. (Funny, isn't it, that people won't pay for vet care???)
It is very hard to treat an ear problem at home, because there are several causes. It could be yeast (that's where that 'beer' smell comes from that was mentioned earlier), bacteria, ear mites...
You can try to get a good ear cleaner from a pet store and use that, just follow the directions on the bottle. But, if she won't let you touch one of her ears, it means that ear is very painful! Plus, all that ear shaking can cause a hematoma which is going to be a really big vet bill in the future. So the best thing is to get her to a vet ASAP because it won't get any better until it is properly treated. And really, it shouldn't be too much--just an office visit, an ear swab (literally just a long q-tip in each ear, smeared onto a slide and looked at under the microscope), and then whatever medication is deemed necessary. It's worth it--have you ever had an ear infection? They are very painful. If it's itchy--does she scratch at the ear often? That can cause problems too, I've seen dogs with raw red ear flaps from scratching so much, then that gets infected too...it's just a big mess. The best thing to do is let a doctor treat the problem properly.
Good luck.

It does sound like an ear infection. Breeds with the flopped over ears are more prone to them because they do not have the air circulation and it is easy for the debris to get caught in there. You can cut down on the infections by cleaning the ears on a regular basis. There are solutions that you can buy at the pet stores.
If it is a bacterial infection she will need to go on oral antibiotics plus medicated ear ointments. It could also be an yeast infection from the moisture, and then she needs the medicated ointment. But you need to go to the vet to get that stuff.

I have two Golden Retrivers and I am a Dog groomer so I have it on good account that most ear infections are caused by yeast. Thats right your dog probly have a yeast infection in its ears, but it is soooo common! The best thing to do is try to elminate most wheat, corn, and flower products from you dogs diet. So no more milk bones or pizza crusts. You can get foods that are wheat free and treats too. As for clearing up the curen infection use cotton balls and q-tips to clear out any visible gunk with a little proxide. From experience with this I have learned that ear drops and most ear cleaners dont work and just cause a big mess.

Contact your local animal shelter and see if they offer low-cost veterinary care. It sounds like an ear infection. If it is, she is probably miserable. It's very painful if you've ever had one. The worst case scenario if left untreated would be an ear hematoma, where the ear flap actually swells from the constant trauma of shaking her head over and over again. Treating that is even more costly because it usually requires surgery. If there is any way you can borrow the money to get her to a vet, please do.

Good luck!

Be it mites or an infection if she keeps shaking her head like that she is going to get a hemotoma. Her ear will fill up with blood like a balloon and have to be cut open, Have a drain plug stitched in her ear, and then your vet bill will really hurt YOU!! She is in misery, she needs to have it taken care of now.

She might have ear mites. You can buy over the counter medicine for that too. I have also heard that you can use baby oil for ear mites. Just drop a teaspoon full in her ear once a day for 3 or 4 days.
