I've looked in the high street bookstalls and there are plenty of choices. Does anyone have a good recommendation?

There are a series of Audio CDs by a Linguist by the name of Michel Thomas...they are pretty good and come in the basics, more advanced and vocabulary builder. They can be found on ebay or amazon. The only problem is, if you like his style, he has unfortunately died so won't be producing anymore. Should be a good start though.

There's an excellent web site for French beginners (but it's in French) :

www.lexilogos.com

and then you chose the British Flag (wich means English); there you can find some good English / French, French / English dictionnaries, some french lessons for you as well as french culture.

Je te conseillerais comme musique Axelle Red, regarde une fois sur http://www.axelle-red.com/fr/discography/ . Très belle voix, textes engagés, style soul. Le dernier CD "Jardin Secret" a été enregistré à Memphis.

Actually, if you happen to be British, "les carnets du majeur Thompson" by Pierre Daninos and "Astérix en Brittanique" should make some hilarious reading.

Linguaphone is marvellous. You might even be able to borrow it from your public library. In fact, why not try the library as first port of call, before rushing off to invest in any course?
