Hello,
People have a misconception about a dog chewing. Some peeps think dogs only chew when teething, this of course being the number one reason.
There are other reasons. Dogs will chew out of loneliness. The owner goes to work all day leaving there pooch at home all by themselves. Dogs get ticked off and board too! They do not like being at home with nothing to do! So might as well chew up something, of course not the chew toy in front of him but something that is going to tick you off too! Pooch gets way more attention when chewing on something he/she is not supposed too. One of our dogs would pull the couch to the front door, try to get it outside! This was the massive, and before the owner and I got together we were merely friends and the mess the dog would leave behind only for my other half to clean up when getting home from work.
Some dogs chew out of nervousness. These are the dogs who do not get what they need from there owner, can we say Prozac for dogs? They are the ones who tremble when one goes to pet them or cower when one gets close, even pee's on the floor with tail tucked in between legs.
Dogs do not get out of there puppy stage until well into 2's, terrible 2's lol!
No one breed of dog is going to chew more then another. Puppy's need attention and the right training to grow up to be a well mannered dogs. The right nutrition for there age.
One thing peeps can do to eliminate chewing up items which are not to be chewed up, is put these items away. Out of site even "child" prof your home for those smarter dogs who know how to open doors.
Two of our dogs are tall enough to get anything off the counter they want. We do not put away leftovers they will be gone if we do not pay attention, mainly our Saint Bernard. He still acts like a puppy and since we did not get him until he was grown up we did not and still do not no what to expect out of him. I did put out a nice chocolate cream pie to thaw on the counter and walked away, the massif had himself a nice treat.
Some things in your home are even hazardous for your dog! House plants are one!
Out of site out of mind.......
Good luck! Maybe find a doggie day care in your area?

Chewing is a natural dog behavior and dogs usually do it out of stress or lack of attention. A majority of dogs do it in a way of protest, for some dogs any attention even bad attention is good attention. Make sure your dog has plenty of exercise, it satisfies the attention need and helps to elevate pent up energy and stress. Also make sure your dog has enough stuff that is permissible to chew on, like chew toys, compressed rawhide, the tendons etc. There are also sprays that you can buy at the pet stores like Bitter Apple or Natures Miracle that will leave an awful taste in their mouth. Cayenne Pepper also works. The dog will learn to associate those items as disgusting and tend to avoid them.

I always give my dachshund a rawhide bone which she loves, but some dog owners don't agree with rawhide bones or pig ears at all. There are some risks of choking and diarrhea, but there are no signs of either of those in my dog from months of happy chewing. You can also find lasting chew toys. Chew treats, like Jumbone, did give my dog some problems with her stomach, so I don't suggest anything like that.

Keep things away from them like toys etc that you don't want them to chew on. Give them special dog toys. You can buy Bitter Bitter Spray that will work with some dogs. Also just be aware: when you see them doing it, tell them "No" and throw a book or something at them. (that way "you" aren't punishing them the book is. and don't do it maliciously.) Don't be discouraged, they usually grow out of it!!

If it's a lab,, there is nothing you can do,, short of pulling all their teeth,, I had once since she was a puppy,, until she was 2, she chewed up everything. Even an electric cord that was plugged in,, still did not phase her. Always gave chew toys and bones,, it is just bred in them........

Make sure your dog is getting plenty of exercise/play each day. When you are not within view or able to watch your dog or if you leave home, make sure your dog is crated/kenneled with acceptable items to chew/play with. Don't give him/her the opportunity to misbehave.
