I am from Brazil and I agree with you, well, most people in Latin America agree with you. That's why we are called Latin America, because we are from the latin part of America. It's nice to know that there are people in the United States that think like you!

We are on the American continent. So we are Americans. We are also united states, therefore we are the United States of America.
To be proper, when we say America we would be referring to all three countries on the American continent. BUT, we usually if not always are referring to the U.S.
Africa is composed of numerous countries that look much like the US on a map, but are separate countries. They refer to themselves as African.
Best I can do.

It is called United Mexican States, it does not have America in its title. Why are US citizens called Americans? I suppose your explanation of having america in the name explains it, but I know some canadians who consider themselves "American" (but they are always quick to clarify)

Partly for brevity, partly because in YOUR patriotic song "America the beautiful", that's how you refer to it. There's also "Air America" "Pan American Airlines" and a plethora of other companies who distinguish themselves as being "American", not "US" or "North American".
