Or is it more than just at fast food restuarants? Ive seen this more than onece. I am watching swedes, germans, japanese, russians, other eastern europeans, british and americans and I dont see the same - generally they dont eat with their mouth open.
Is it a cultural thing with the chinese? Something do with their tradition of eating or chewing food or their teeth?

Ok So this is obviously not just about opening your mouth just to get food in. Its about chewing the food with the mouth open.
I dont wish to watch people eat but at a restaurant its nearly impossible. Especially if you can see into their gaping maws full of half eaten food.
So I am looking forward to reading intelligent answers with great...er..gusto.

In some Asian cultures, smacking your lips as you eat is considered a sign of respect. It shows the cook that they did a good job, and that the food is deliciously made (and appreciated).

You are very rude. Why on earth would you feel compelled to stare at someone you don't know?
Some people suffer mouth problems and cannot chew with their lips together.
Some people have breathing issues - but they still need to eat. Many people need to beathe through their mouths as they eat because their noses are not able to let enough air through.
Yes, it is a cultural thing. In many cultures and even Christian religions, it is considerd polite to belch at the table. The louder, the better. It is seen as a complement that you enjoyed the food.
Stop wondering why other people do the things they do and mind your own business.

I've seen a lot of "fellow Americans" eat with their mouths open too. Having spent some time in Asia, I don't remember seeing this. If they use chop sticks, they do hold their bowls closer to their mouths in order not to drop rice, etc. It sounds like you are laboring under some pernicious stereotypes...

I don't mean to be sarcastic. Don't we all eat with our mouth open! Otherwise it would be difficult for any species to eat. I think you need to rephrase your question a bit. cheers!
