difficult to answer, older VWs were very reliable but recently many VW are made in Spain where the attention to build quality detail is bad. Ford have always been reasonable and may just be better than VW at the moment. Before buying a particular car model look it up in Which? or the JD Power survey.
For overall reliability buy Japanese

It depends in which factory any particular car is built, and which model it is.
Generally a Ford from Dagenham (e.g. pre-2001 Fiesta) will not be so reliable, as Ford didn't invest in so much new equipment for that facility for many years, whereas a Ford from the Saarlouis plant in Germany (Focus, Focus C-Max) is one of the most reliable cars around (the first-generation Focus beat the Toyota Corolla in a reliability survey in Germany).
The 1996-2005 Galaxy, and the VW Sharan are less reliable (they come from a factory in Portugal). The Golf III had some problems, the Golf IV much less.
I don't know about reliability issues on non-European products.

First and foremost, look at where the cars get developed and tested. In Ford's case, that means primarily UK or USA. Volkswagen means Germany. This means that ford will develop and test their cars for use at say 75mph max 95% of the time. Volkswagen on the other hand has to satisfy Autobahn drivers who sometimes sit foot to the floor in the fast lane hour after hour. All stresses in a car increase dramatically as speed increases. Certain issues will get passed by Ford, which at Volkswagen will constitute a redesign. You may not always travel at high speed, but you will have the peace of mind when the situation arises or the elements are against you. In my mind, features and looks are nice things but we are humans and easily adapt to nearly any environment, like different car interiors. The most important feature is good basic sturdy solid design, ensuring that I get from A to B even if conditions are less favourable. I recently got caught in a bad storm. My passenger was so ill that I had to press on regardless in order to get her to hospital. The highway was lined with vehicles which drivers' pulled over and stopped because of the amount of rain and 80mph gusts. The VW Golf I was driving felt rock-solid. And that is what makes all the difference in the world. I couldn't help noticing that the only other cars still driving were either Mercedes, Audi or BMW. All developed for continous high speed driving. It just does something for in-built safety. Sorry that I went a bit off-topic, but the above incident made me look at cars and their qualities in quite a different light. And because of the different design philosophy, the VW will definatley be more reliable - by a considerable margin.

The old VW. Since most cars are now made else where with cheaper materials are not so reliable. So i'd guess equally either. Get one based on the availability of ford or vw repair shops around.

I tested different cars for a living , i have tested more than 15000 cars till now maybe more . Ford has a few problems , they love to rust- brake pipe and primary structure.front wishbone bushes , anti roll bars in front go.they make noisy engines and don't forget about fault power steering racks.Well on the other hand vw has weak front brake hoses , and and , well i cant think of anything else.I go for VW , Vw rules , the interior is real nice as well.Long live Mk1 golf , and guess what golf 1 is still made in South Africa , soon will be made for 30 yrs , what can one say .Vw is a legend -beetle

I would say Ford all the way. Look at the names: Mustang, Fusion, Expedition, Explorer, Focus, Escape, FreeStyle. jeez they WAY beat names like Rabbit, Beetle and Jetta.
Seriously, I have never had a Ford I did not like or have the utmost confidence in. Right now we have a 1998 Expedition that we have had NO trouble with and it looks brand new. We also have a 2004 Mustang convertible, a 2005 Mustang GT and a 2006 Fusion (that I dearly LOVE) that are terrific. For years we had Escorts and they were super, too. I could go on and on.
We only had one VW and it was a huge lemon and the dealership sucked, too.
My biggest pet peeve is Americans (as in the United States) buying foreign cars. And don't give me the bunk about some US cars being made in foreign countries which I know is true. The MONEY still stays here if you buy American. Wow! Don't get me started!

VW's are probably more reliable overall, but if a Ford breaks down it will be probably be alot cheaper than having the same problem on a VW. Ford parts will be cheaper, easier to get hold of and it will be easier to find a mechanic to fix it.

well i have a ford focus and i must say it is a lovely car to drive and handles the road really well and it is smooth. The only vw i have is a 1956 vw beetle oval window with 6 volt electrics, and i must say that is also a very good car.

The build quality of the vw's are great, the germans may not be very good at most things but they have it down to a Tee when they manufacture a car! just look at the 911 automotive excellence. fords are cheeper to fix because there are more of theme lying in scrap yards or left abandoned at the side of the road like i did this morning with my escort van 1.8 diesel. timing belt came off !! GO FOR THE VW! (you wont regret it)

VW would be better most likely. Especially the new ones, they seem to be doing pretty good, my friend has an 03 jetta with no problems. But watch out for the older 2000, 2002 ones. You might wana google reviews for them to see which one has better reliability and less problems.
