I lived in NY for many years. What stands out, as far as your question in concerned, is The Museum of the City of New York. I went there with my class in the 4th grade, and have since made many trips back there. I was sooo impressed with the realistic clothing, homes, and items there - wow, I wish I weren't in AZ now :)

Today's Canal Street actually was a canal in Dutch colonial days.
