Talking to yourself. The second is answering.
Alternativly, the first sign might be that you consider yourself as two different people, this often leads to confusion, and from there, madness.

Paranoia and knowing that it's not you who's mad/(crazy for Americans) it's everyone else; followed by hearing voices and asking people what the first sign of madness is.

I don't know if its the first. But talking to yourself and answering back is definitely a sign.
Arguing with the walls as if they are human is another sign.
Thinking something that happened on television is happening, or happened to you is a sign.

when someone becomes so involved in religion to the point that they are afraid. I had a friend that out of the blue started preaching to me everyday. I just listened and then he started busting mirrors everytime he looked into one. I became afraid of him and then one day I decided to give him a call and his mother said they committed him. When he became so envolved in religion when he was never a spiritual person to begin w/ was a red flag that something was about to happen.
