Right click the top of the Getting Started bar and a Task Bar menu will appear. Get rid of the Task Pane tool bar...done!

If you are talking about the office assistant which asks you what you want to do n stuff, then click on Help in Word and if you see Show the Office Assistant checked, then click on it once to uncheck it.

Try draging its left border to make it thinner...it is less irritating then. If it helps you can close it by Ctrl-F1 but its seems u have to do it every time :(
