Tradition and aesthetics mostly.
Also, they have long tails they can't help wagging so hard they injure themselves. They make themselves bleed because they just can't stop wagging! Not to mention knocking stuff over, off coffee tables and making messes.
I have a Labrador, and I wish sometimes that we had her tail docked for these reasons.

Cutting off (or "docking") boxer's tails is something that has been done for years. It is also done for many other breeds including doberman pinchers and yorkshire terriers.
Usually when the tail is cut off, it's for cosmetic reasons (for looks), but sometimes a dog might have an infection on their tail (or a specific breed has tails so long that they are easily cut or injured), so the tail is cut off for health reasons. Tradition for boxers is hunting, and a long tail simply wasn't easy to hunt with. Usually it's done when the dog is young and they can't feel it.
It might sound cruel, but try to remember that its been done for years and that the dogs don't feel it very easily.

Most people think boxers were ment to have nubs for tails but they dont realize that iff the dog was ment to not have a tail it wouldn't have been born with one. Just like their ears, if they were ment to stick up they would a few weeks afrer birth.

somewhat some the time dogs with cropped tails had to have them cropped as doggies. in spite of the fact that, at present there's a undeniable off shoot of Boxer it particularly is definitely born with a short, stubby, cropped looking tail. they are customary as bobtail boxers. they are exceedingly uncommon in the US nevertheless yet i assume there is an off possibility that your buddy's mixed breed puppy ought to've been the effect of a bobtail boxer and golden retriever and hence would have been born with a stubby tail of course.

It's called 'Docking;.
On certain breeds they cut off the tails and the floppy tips of thier ears. Don't know why, but they used to do the same to horses. Must be some fashion thing...

No idea! I think it's cruel. A beauty myth. I think it's awful when dogs have their ears made into points too. The cutest parts of the pup are those floppy ears! I have a min-pin chi mix and some people like to do the bobbing and cutting to them...but she's simple perfect and adorable the way she is.
