By ignoring the warning signs that are usually pretty obvious we simply choose to over write what we see. Missing work, bills unpaid, drunk or high alot, hygiene suffers, freinds dont come around or the wrong people hang on to you, no inner peace is a real warning sign that we tend to ignore. That one is a dead on - no miss sign that your life is way out of focus and a "course correction" is desparately needed and soon.
On the other hand there are a good number of people in prison who are 100% innocent and good people have been imprisoned; John, Matthew, Paul, Mahatma Ghandi, Martin Luder, Martin Luther King, Joan of Arc, the very Son of God was imprisoned (temporarily but only for the purpose of killing him later) thousands of Iraqis are currently being detained in a makeshift prison in thier own country. There are two sides to this is what i'm saying. Good and noble people have been imprisoned for being good and noble. Hell, the DA tried to have Mark Karr plead guilty to a crime he couldnt have done because the pc they had in evidence didnt work the time he was accused of having kiddie porn and they were trying to hide this from the public as well as his lawyers. Was he going to prison? nope but his fate would have been much worse, he would have had to register as a sex offender for life. Which means that he could be arrested for whatever, whenever, whereever guilty or not. The guys a nut case for sure but he hasnt actually done anything. So going behind bars isnt always what it appears to be on the surface. Perhaps God is trying to get your freinds attention.

Hi Ann,
It depends.
Some people have no awareness that the life they are leading is a direct, dead-end path (of prison).
Others may have an awareness, but because of their economic, financial, and educational circumstances, feel trapped. They perceive that they won't get caught of if they do, it was meant to be.
For those who don't have either circumstance to worry about, a check and balance with yourself (i.e. am I doing anything illegal???) is good to do plus a volunteer stint in a correctional facility is a great way to bring a lot of disillusioned individuals to their senses.

When what they are doing is in some way causing harm to others or is patently self-destructive. Anything that violates the "golden rule" would be a good guide. The obvious vices like drugs, alcohol and petty crimes open the door...

It is usually well marked by signs and the steady traffic of buses and corrections vehicles are another clue. If there are frequent road signs warning against picking up hitchhikers they are on the right track.

It's called a conscience and you hear it in your head and heart. Think of it as God's voice whispering in your head and heart.

Usually one can only tell when they've hit 'rock bottom'. Unfortunately, if often comes too late.
