The birds themselves don't smell but the cage and the surrounding area smells bad. I clean the cage and vaccum the surrounding area everday. What do I do to get rid of the smell? I didn't have this problem when I had only 2 parakeets.

I clean the cage everyday as well as vaccuum cause they are always shedding feathers.

Take the birds out and give the cages a GOOD cleaning. I do not think that just a vacuum will do the trick..

Take the birds out of the cage and SCRUB it (not with soap--with water and elbow grease)--the bars, the perches, the toyes--everything. Every day you should remove the food and water dishes and replace them with new, clean, freshly filled dishes too. Just changing the paper doesn't clean the cage. You need to do this on a regular basis. Also, if you've got 5 birds in the same cage where you had 2, it's probably overcrowded.

Not only should you clean the paper in the cage every day, but at leat 2-3 times a week the cage needs to be washed with hot water, and the tray scrubbed down really good and disinfected at least of once a week.

Clean the cage daily. and buy a bird bath for them. The bath set's on the cage at the opening of the door.

There is nothing wrong in keeping birds but all you have to do is give the cage a good cleaning with bird disinfectant and give them the correct conditions but i hope it is a large indoor avairy cage?

Instead of lining the bottom of the cage with newspaper, use cedar chips. My husband used to have 7 parakeets, and that's what he did. He says as long as you're always cleaning the food, water, area, etc...that should take care of it.
