Sects are usually smaller groupings of a larger religion; Christian denominations are often referred to as sects, or Hare Krishnas are a sect of Hinduism. Nothing wrong with a sect.

Cults, meanwhile, are the icky ones.

A cult is a religion you don't like. A sect is a nice way for saying a part of a cult.
