Prednisone is usually the preferred treatment for AIHA. Of course check with the vet and follow the treatment plan they have prescribed.
The time it takes to get the blood count up depends on the dog and the degree of the disease. Your vet should be able to help with that.
According to this site, 5-7 days.

It takes several days for the RBCs to mature to where they can carry oxygen. How did the immature RBCs look?

I hope he is on Prednisone? Azathioprine is another drug that can be used along with Pred, I think it really made a difference with my girl. A transfusion is only a temporary treatment until the drugs can start raising the RBC count.

The mortality rate for this disease is 60%, although some do recover totally and never have any more problems with it.

One of my dogs had this and had to have blood transfusions every 4-6 weeks for a year. She also had to take anabolic steroids, antibiotics, raw liver everyday, and vitamins. Finally, her counts went up and stayed up(though they never were as high as a normal dog's).She lived another four years before we had to have her put down due to complete kidney failure.
