The minus next to the six cancels out the plus, so it's Minus 12 minus 6, which equals -18.
Hope this helps.

If you think of a number line with zero being the centre you go along that line either left (minus) or right (plus)
so starting at -12 you would go to the right for the plus but as the figure is actually -6 it reverses the way you go and therefore you would end up at -18

the brackets are just separating -6 from the + sign. so really it's:
-12-6 = -18

This sum means take away 12 and then take away another 6 from zero. When you have sums like these with plusses and minuses, always think of the start as zero. The sum then makes sense.
To do this sum, first think of the start as 0. (zero). Think of the plusses as 'and'. So, zero take away 12. We get minus 12. (-12) Then it's AND minus another 6. Take away another 6 and you arrive at minus 18. (-18).
The brackets are there just to separate the signs from the numbers. +(-6) means: AND the number 'minus 6'.
With all these sums, if it's minus a minus number, e.g. -(-6), it means plus. So, -(-6) = +6. Or just 6. If it's plus a plus, it means plus. e.g. +(+6) = 6. If it's plus a minus, that is, AND a minus,e.g. +(-6) it means a minus. -6.
If it's minus a plus -(+6), it means minus. -6.
I hope this helps.

I think you mean -12 (+/- 6), if so it means that the answer lies between -18 and -6. Very confussing, isn't it?

Well you could also just write it as
-12 - 6 = -18
But changing it to -12 + -6 makes it easier to understand and compute the problem.

answer is -18. The brackets simply "contain" the second part of the sum, don't let the brackets freak you.
