=this could either be a funny story as most of us are/or were pack rats at one point in our lives. It could also be that your mom has emotional issues like people that eat too much to cover the pain. It sounds like you have discussed this with her and that your dad has given up as well. You can either accept her and love her as she is or talk with another relative and see if they think she needs professional help. Good luck

I am a packrat, too. Your mother maybe doing the same thing I do. Let me explain the reasons why I have a cluttered house and it may help you see your mother differently.
I cherish everything I have collected whether I need it or not. I go to yard sales after yard sales grabbing every old item I can get. The older it looks the higher the price will be later on in the years. Why? If I collect enough stuff, my children will be able to sell the item for a higher price when I am no longer on this earth to help them through hard times. My children know that the cost of funeral expenses are rising year after year. I remind them constantly when they ask why I keep this item or that item. My answer, I tell them that they will have to sell it to bury me and pay the final bills when my day comes. Because they will be responsible for all unpaid bills. They don't wipe those accounts off when the person dies. They will bill the next to kin all unpaid bills. This way I am providing items for them to sell so I won't be a burden to them when it is my turn to die.

Tell her what you just told us. Try and explain to her that she is embarrassing you with all the usless junk lying around. Try to be very stern and don't give in.

Do it when she isn't there.
