I don't know how to explain this, but when I look at a woman, I can almost always tell if she is a mom, just by the way she looks. I'm not sure what it is, but something about her face just says, "I'm a mom." I have had friends and acquaintances who I knew before, as well after they have had kids. Something changes. Maybe it's the the eyes, or face as a whole. I don't know what exactly. There's nothing negative about this. It's just a simple and odd observation. Like I said, I can't really pinpoint what the change is, but it's definitely there. I am not implying or referring to the obvious other post-childbirth body changes! Whatever I am seeing is *above* the shoulders, so let's keep the discussion in that area, if possible.
Any ideas what makes a mom look like a mom? Maybe some moms are aware of whatever changed about their own appearance, and they can tell everyone here and solve my mystery?

You know I would have to say the soul of the woman herself has changed. and the eyes are the windows to the soul. For most women, their soul is not complete until they have carried a child inside them and delivered it into the world, whether they know it at the time or not. Without even trying, the light in their eyes can overcome the exhaustion of never sleeping, the tears they shed can leave permanent marks on their cheeks. The most important thing to them becomes the child and there will always be a gleam of protection in the eyes, no longer the search for fullfillment. The turbulence of child raising can flush the cheeks in tiredness or frustration, but the eyes will always hold love.

I wish I knew!
Way too often I get confused for being a mother. I'm a bit wide in the hips, but I guess it's more the way I carry myself and my mannerisms. The students in the residence I work at say I've got the mom look down pat, the "I can't believe you did that, I am so disappointed in you" look that makes them squirm... or maybe it's just that I don't flinch from the gross stuff, like having a drunken underager barf on your bare feet.
At least I'm now at an age where other people assuming I have children isn't an insult.

There is a love light and a wisdom and a few more lines around the eyes because moms are always tired. LOL! Mom's with newborns is easy to tell because they are usually zombied because of lack of sleep and you can tell if you look at their shoulders. There's usually something on their shirts, lol! Baby throwup, carrots, strained peas. Etc. I think it is knowing they are so incredibly needed by their young. Sometimes, it looks like a ferocity because they are always thinking about the other responsibilities they need to take care of during that day, week, month, future. Know what I mean? Joy is also mixed in their too because we all fall head over heels with our babies. It never goes away. I believe it is the look of love.

I agree with many answers here, but there are exceptions to your "mom-look" rule, you just haven't noticed them.
I have never been told I look like a mother. In fact, most comments are the opposite that I don't look OLD ENOUGH to be a mom. That I'm almost 40 and have 4children, but look only like the older sister to my two teens. That I'm 5'6' and weigh in at 115lbs.
So there are mom's all over the place that you simply don't realize are mom's.

Besides the obvious exhaustion, and bags under the eyes... lol
I do notice softer eyes, and some just seem full of love!
But explain the love women feel for their children after birth? They can't. It' just happens!

Let's see...a look of tiredness is usually a dead giveaway. That's what people say aboutme since I became a mom 2 years ago.

i dont know if its the same for all countries. but from what i've seen from my country and my sis. after they become a mum, they tend to 'let themselves go'. they devote most of their time to children and stopped grooming themselves as much. :x

they are no longer flirting with you, they are looking at you with kind, adoring eyes. eyes that you have seen in your mom.
