Mother Teresa said of loneliness: Loneliness and the feeling of being unwanted is the most terrible poverty.

When I am lonely, I give myself time to reflect on the life changes that may have occurred resulting in my feelings of being disconnected and isolated from others and the world. What I usually find is that I am clinging to things that are beyond my control. The Buddhist thought regarding this painful emotion is fascinating. Loneliness is attributed to clinging, and clinging results in suffering. The belief is that with practice we can experience the painful events of life and the human condition without suffering. For expample pain is unavoidable and is found in infinite sources, physical, mental, spiritual. Suffering is a condition that we allow to accompany pain. Because of this, we can choose to experience pain without suffering by learning not to cling. The best method I have found to reach this level of experiencing loneliness without suffering is through the practice of transcendental meditation. You can check with your local Holistic Health Center for classes. There are also many books that discuss this. Sylvia Boorstein's book: It's Easier Than You Think: The Buddhist Way to Happiness is excellent.
