It will possibly damage the baby; but out of curiosity if she's been trying for a baby for ages why didn't she stop drinking and smoking earlier?

The first 12 weeks are when the baby develops all the vital organs and systems. Drinking daily during any of those first 12 weeks is especially harmful to the baby. Children are born without limbs or functional systems because of it. Theres also brain damaged caused by a mother who drinks through her pregnancy, and babies are even born drunk as a result.
Smoking also complicates the baby's health greatly. Most premie babies that die are a result of a mother who smoked through pregnancy. Doesnt matter how much. The chemicals are toxic to the fetus, and oxygen is robbed from the blood, not to mention nutrients and other vital needs the fetus has.
There are life long, long term effects on the baby as it grows into an adult. Health issues that person will carry through out life because of how he was formed in the womb.
Your friend had no business leading this lifestyle and knowingly trying to become pregnant. I pitty this child greatly.
Having to suffer as a result of a selfish parent is one thing, not being able to choose anything else is cruel.

she DOES NOT REALLY WANT THIS BABY, OR SHE WOULD NOT BE DOING WHAT SHE IS...cutting down doesn't help either
she has to stop altogether....the babies lungs cannot develop right if she is smoking, as far as drinking, the baby could have FAS with this the baby may be taken away....Fetal alcohol syndrome is a terrible thing for a child to go through...God help her if there is any other drugs in her system....Good luck to you and your friend...you both need help god bless

maybe yes, maybe no. Alot of people end up consuming alcohol, tobacco, even drugs in the first few weeks of their pregnancies cause they dont know yet. I quit smoking in my 6th month, I never drank but I smoked a little bit of pot in the first month but I also ate extremely well during my pregnancy and took prenatal vitamins with folic acid (very important to help protect against birth defects) but my daughter is just fine, beautiful and smart.
