Mathematics was seen as a language of the Gods. Many Greeks saw something divine with maths also(remember Pythagorus?). Probably mainly for its predictability and logical properties. 12 is for us also today if you notice. 12 hours in a day (light portion, on the clock anyway), 12 months in year. 12 in a dozen, we have individual names for the numbers up to 12 then at 13 we start saying 'teen' and so on. and many more 12 was probalby because of the 12 complete phases of the moon in a year, this has been known for thousands of years
Read Philo, Jewish theologian from around 0 bc - 50 ad. He is right into the mathematics of life, like its Gods secret seal.
Of course we know better than to trust such things now.

talked with some friends about this one lenten season.... you had the 40 days of noah, the 40 days in the dessert, we had a few others as well but....
i keep checking back for asnwers and well.... thanks for asking and i'm sorry i don't have a realy asnwer. it just seems like 40 days/nights is a time to test and a good period in which a full decision can me made. you can't do much in 2 weeks when it comes to decision making and back then - 40 day's wasn't as long (IMO) as it is now -- i mean when it would take you 3-7 days just to get where you are going.....

thanks for asking!

In Biblical terms 40 days only meant a really long undetermined time. Not a specific 40 days

If you really want to know I recommend the study of numerology. 7 and 13 are important numbers like 11,22, and 33. That's why 13 is in the U.S. dollar so many times

Forty seems to indicate a time of testing...a time in bondage, before being freed.
