Weight lifting is an effective way to incease strength and muscle mass. There is no one specific best method to achieve this. In fact a variety of techniques and methods is the best.

However, if weight LOSS is your objective, weight lifting is not the best way to achieve this. Cardio training is much more effective for burning fat. Cardio training can include everything from a brisk walk to serious running, and can include things like cycling, swimming and cross country skiing (my favorites).

You need to know that there is a big fat lie out there. You CANNOT lose fat from one part of the body by exercising that part of the body. Its a lie. Please believe me.

Fat is just how our body stores food energy. Different people tend to store fat in different places but this has little to do with exercise patterns and more to do with genetics.

When you burn more calories than you eat, your body is in need of extra food energy and starts to burn off the fat, from EVERYWHERE in the body.

Simply slowy increase your activity levels and slowly decrease your food intake (and substitute healthier foods). You can include weight lifting as part of your exercise program, it won't hurt you if done properly, but cardio workouts have been proven to be better at burning off fat.

There is a way of weight lifting that is called "Free Weights" and there is International Competition in it.
One lifts a metal bar that has circular flat weights at each end.
I believe this method is supposed to be of more benefit than the Machines.
