Lets get the terminology straight......I have never seen a vehicle that had a SERIAL NUMBER-----it has always been called a VIN number, or Vehicle Identification Number. Calling it a serial number is like calling an engine--a Motor.......
Yes a VIN can be used to obtain info on a vehicle, --just on the car/truck, (and not on past owners), where it was made, what plant produced it, engine size, etc.\

it will tell you when, where, and what your truck is, parts of the number will be used for parts and paint, as well as body/production style. I use the VIN # at part stores, in Chilton repair books and at the insurance company,because of 1 number letter combo in the vin I save on my auto insurance(not geiko) hope this helps.
