When a file is saved to a hard drive, it is saved in a large number of separate "chunks". To retrieve the file, the computer has to look up in its internal directory to find all the chunks and put them together. Defragmenting takes all the individual chunks and writes them as one continuous stream (assuming there's room). It isn't mandatory to do it, but it will speed up your disk retrieval if you have a lot of large fragmented files that you use frequently.

Defragmenting is the process of sorting of data on the hard drive into logical order. Think of Windows like a child who picks something up, plays with it and then puts it down where-ever it happens to be - that's what windows does with the files that it accesses. Defragmenting is like walking round after the child and putting the things back where they belong.
Defragmentation is something you should get into the habit of doing on a regular basis - recommended is at 10% fragmentation (every two weeks should do).

It basically tidies up the files on your hard disk. This means that the computer has to spend less time trying to find the right bits of files and more time running your programs. It is quite important in terms of keeping your PC running at it's best but not essential unless your hard disk is getting full. Also Windows Xp does not need this as much as previous versions as the way it sorts its disk space is better.

Your computer writes to the hard drive in fragments and then it keeps a record of where all the fragments are. After a while it takes a long time for the computer to find all the fragments - so you defragment. All the fragments are moved into blocks and you computer finds them faster and so it speeds up your computer. if you delete a lot and don't defragment - your computer will slow to a snails pace in a few months. Programs and particularly data like documents and pictures will take a long time to load - and even music may not play properly.

To understand this, you have to visualise the following:
Firstly, your hard disk is divided into tracks and sectors. These are called chunks. When you are saving a file on your disk, the file is saved in one of those chunks. Now, it may happen that there is still some free space in this chunk despite the file is stored there. However, you cannot use this free space. So, ultimately, disk space is lost.
This is where disk defragmentation comes in. Disk defragmentation refers to a technique used by the operating system to re-arrange the order of the files stored on the hard disk. Therefore, it frees up space by properly arranging the files.
As a result, when accessing a file, the time taken will be faster.

Disk Defragmenting is the re-indexing of the data in the hard disk so that the same file is closed or contiguous. It makes the hard disk search files faster and run faster. Rule of thumb is run defragment every 2 months.

When you open a program, your computer has to find it on your hard drive. When it is where it should be, the access time is fast. Info on the drive gets misplaced mainly when you download new info to the drive. Defrag and put it back in order once a week for the fast access you expect.

ok,you have a sock drawer, in the sock drawer are 45 pairs of socks (so u have 90 socks altogether) but not all the socks are paired properly. so u have a drawer with all your socks in it but its hard and time consuming to find them, there may even be stray socks u dont need, so u spend time taking the socks out and putting them back in pairs and back neatly in the drawer. u have just defragmented ur sock drawer. the resultis u have the exact same socks,minus the few strays and the drawer is far more manageable than it was before, even though its just the same stuff in there.
its important if u want the sock drawer to perform at its best.

This is how the disk in computer should look;
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
However everytime you delete something or uninstall a program it leaves a gap, if your computer is running slowly its probly because of this.
This is how a disk that needs to be defragmented would look;
___________ _________ _______________ _________________________ ______________________________ _____________________________________
For the computer to work at its best you should have all files related to one another in one section, all the files are moved during defragmentation in order to remove the spaces and speed everything up.
Depending on how often you use your computer the frequency of this process can vary from anything between once a week to once a month, the more often you do this the quicker it will be each time.

Basically it just puts all your files together that are supposed to be.
Like putting files in alphabetical order so they are easier to find.
Same with a PC it needs the files that are related to each other closer together so it can run quicker, if not then this slows the PC down
