My mom just got diagnosed with a tumor on her right kidney and it has spread to her lungs and her bones. What can they do for this? What does it all mean? She had blood in her urine yesterday, she went to the ER and they did a CT scan. Nothing can be done until tomorrow but I want info now to help me cope.

I'm sorry, I can imagine the kind of mental torment you must be going through.

With cancer that has already metastasized (spread) to her lungs and bones, your mom is going to be in for the long haul. Since the cancer has already spread, especially to vital parts of the body, the doctors will probably treat it aggressively, likely through a lot of chimotherapy or radiation, though your mother will ultimately be the one to decide what she wants done.

Wikipedia has a fantastic article on cancer, if you want to just skip down to the "treatment" section to get an idea of what your mom might get. They'll probably be pretty radiation-intensive, since (as far asI know) you can't surgically remove much lung and bone cancer without causing the patient a LOT of damage. They might try to remove the actual tumor on the kidney, though. Wikipedia also has a bunch of links to cancer websites where you can get more information.

I also found one webpage specifically about kidney cancer, though I actually think (and this is not a particularly informed opinion) that the combined lung and bone cancers might be more dangerous.

Best wishes for you and your mother.

Probably the doctor will recommend an Oncologist. The Oncologist will have few options and will prescribe chemotherapy. It appears that her disease is somewhat advanced and the cancer has metastasized. Please consider that trying to arrest the cancer maybe prolonging her life and decreasing the quality substantially. The prognosis is not good....best of luck and lots of prayers for what sounds like a battle won and a war lost. I am so truly sorry. I had to make this decision with my mother and to act responsibly while making such a difficult decision is hard. Trust your heart and know that I understand and care.

Don't let it surprise you if they start talking surgery. A biopsy will most likely be taken to help her doctor stage the tumor. Treatment should be based on the biopsy results, as different drug combinations and treatment protocols are used fopr different stages.

The best thing you can do for you and for your mom is to have some faith in the doctors and just be there for her. It is going to be a long road but your can do it!

The tumor must now be identified to determine what it is.
From there, the best treatment will be determined.

If it is renal cell carcinoma, I've added some literature. Read up, because, whatever it is, you and your mother have some difficult questions to ask her doctors.

Good luck.

I pray to ALLAH swt no one ever suffers. I really hope your mom gets better and everything gets back to normal. Just dont give up, you all need to be there for each other and stay strong. Keep fighting the cancer through dua (prayer) and medicine. You all need to be focused and get treatment as soon as possible and get checked out regularly. I really feel for you and everyone else in a similar position. Take care...

I couldn't just sit around and do nothing like my doctors suggested.

They didn't want me to do anything or to take herbs or herbal remedies, but I had to try something - they just wanted me to do dialysis!

This program allowed me to take control of my health. I went from Stage 4 to Stage 3 kidney disease.

It was easy to do and my BUN, creatinine and anemia are all in better ranges.

The tumor is in its advanced stage. Speak with your doctor and see if chemo/radiotherapy is of any benefit. There is definitely no surgical sure. Palliative care is the last resort.
