An IED -- Improvised Explosive Device -- is pretty much what it sounds like. The bad guys find something that will go bang in a big way (usually an old artillery round, one of millions Saddam had lying around), and rig it up to be triggered by things like a cell phone, or a remote control, or whatever. The bad guys then bury it alongside a road, camouflage the spot really well, and wait for a good guy to come along, then detonate it.
