The website I linked to below says, "A woman may wear either a short evening gown (knee-length or mid-calf-length) or a dinner suit if her date is wearing a dark suit instead of a tuxedo. A dinner suit is made of finer material than a business one and may have embellishments such as fancy buttons. Long formal gowns would be inappropriate if the gentleman accompanying her is wearing only a business suit (instead of a tuxedo). You may wear one if your date is wearing a tuxedo."
I'd say a nice cocktail dress would be the way to go. You can never go wrong with the "little black dress," or, if you can pull it off, go for bolder colors like crimson, emerald green, or deep blue. Pastels are welcome, as well. Accessorize with tasteful, yet minimal jewelry, around the neck and wrist. Shoes can be either dress pumps or delicate high heel sandals - depending on what dress you're wearing. Pantyhose must be ultra-sheer in a color that matches the shoes.
"For men, a traditional tuxedo is the preferred choice of attire. If he decides not to wear a tuxedo, he may wear a dark suit, white dress shirt and conservative tie," says the website, also.

Black tie IS a tuxedo for men, a woman could wear a long dress with a man dressed this way as an escort.
Preferred, means a man can wear a dark suit, nicely tailored and with this, a dinner suit or short cocktail dress is worn by the woman
If a man wears a dark suit then the only time a woman wears a gown is if she is modeling it at the event.
What she wears is dependant on what he is wearing.
Not fair, but there it is.

Black tie is only marginally less formal than "white tie" which is when you'd wear the ultra-fancy evening gowns. A black tie event is your chance to shine a bit- cocktail dresses are good- anything short and simple in a fine fabric ought to do well. I'd reccommend a delicate handbag. Definitely avoid casual shoes. Since they say "preferred", it sounds like you won't be kicked out if you dress a little up or down in either direction, though.

Black Tie Preferred is a "formal" event and an evening gown would go perfectly. You may also wear a good cocktail dress, but please make certain it's dressy enough for the event. It's not as formal as "white-tie" but it is very formal. Your jewelry should be "good" but not cheap or overly flashy. Pearls are always a good choice. I agree that a delicate handbag would accentuate your clothes and your hair should be put up if it is long. Enjoy your event.

Nope. If it's black tie an evening gown would be the right choice.

Nice dress, at the BCBG Outlet, say it ain't so....Wear silver or gold shoes and handbag, dressy earrings a cute braclet or bangles and you will look great! A little black dress, especially one as cute as that never goes out of style.
