Its a block heater to help keep the engine warm when its super cold outside. Basically to help keep the oil fluid like.

Only IF you live in sub zero freezing weather. It keeps you engine warm and helps it to start on those cold mornings WAY up north. IF you live in the south, you certainly don't need one. Pops

keeps the engine oil warm in really cold conditions, unless you are buying a diesel powered vehicle it's really not needed. i had one in a gas truck and never once used it. i guess if you live way up north or something might want it, but it's a waste of 50 bucks when you buy new.

i live in minneapolis and i have an suv i dont have one its not nessisary i dont think and i park my car outside all the time
