When dealing with spyware, you should use a layered defensee, which means using more than one anti-spyware application. For example, things that are detected by Spybot are missed by Ewido Anti-Spyware and vice-a-versa. By using both, you improve detection and removal rates.

If you are using Internet Explorer then Javacoolsoftware's Spyblaster is a must. It can not scan for spyware. Instead, it adds a hugh list of malicious websites to IE's restricted sites. If you accidentally go to a malicious website, Spyware Blaster will disable Active X and javascript, which is usually the way spyware infects computers via IE. It has an assortment of other tools that can help, such as blocking changes to IE's homepage, blocking ads and tracking cookies.

If you are willing to spend some money, Webroot's Spyware Sweeper and PC Tools' Spyware Doctor both are consistently given high ratings from security experts. Either one would be a good choice. Both cost about $30.00 USD and comes with a one year subscription of definition updates.

I have been using Ewido Anti-Spyware for close to a year now. There has been no rigorous testing of its effectiveness in blocking and scanning spyware. It's o.k. to install it but don't depend solely on it.

When looking at these tools, you need to look at there strengths and weaknessses. For example Spyware Blaster does nothing to remove spyware at all, it's forte is preventing the machine from getting infected. Spybot's is pretty good at removing a problem, has an excellent startup manager, but the resident portions are pretty quirky. The nice thing is that most of these programs can coexist just fine on the system and you can use multiple scanners.

Neither, try Spy Sweeper. I had Norton Anti Virus, and Spy Sweeper, Norton let some material in that should have been caught, but Spy Sweeper caught it. If you have a problem installing it, there is a 800 number to call. Everyone is nice, including the technician, and no problem understanding them.
