We're interested in visiting the Caribbean this December and are tying to find that perfect place that offers clear, calm, white-sand beaches with plenty of on-resort activity. However, it would be nice if the resort had some of an exclusivity and wasn't jam packed with people/kids. It would also be great to go out on excursions and experience the culture in the surrounding region. Presently considering Punta Cana, and Riviera Maya... any suggestions?

I would suggest that you do some reshearch in the INTERNET
all of these Island have beautiful beach
I have visit each one and enjoy
ST Bart
ST Maarten
Anguilla
ST Kitts
Nevis
ST Vincent
in a resort atmosphere you are not going to experience much culture because must of the resort is too busy making you feel like home
you can stay in a resort because you will get a studio or 2 bds with Kictchen but for you to experience the culture you will need to get out and visit around
I like ST Maarten because you can do Island hopping and it is very cheap
in STM you can visit SABA, ANGUILLA,ST BART each for a day

Pretty much any of the Caribbean Islands has tranquil, clear waters. All of the islands are beautiful. One of my favorites is St. Lucia and also Antigua.
Have you considered a cruise? you can sample a bit of several islands that way and then maybe make up your mind about taking a stationary vacation on one of the islands you sampled at a later date. Just a thought!
Whatever you decide to do I am sure you will not be disappointed. The islands of the Caribbean are little gems each in their own way.

I personally like Cozumel but i am a scuba diver and the water is perfect, clear and high vis... Almost any resort will be packed, i have stayed in Playa Decarmen and Cozumel if you stay in coz there are plenty resorts that are way out of the main town and lots of beach and fun. Iberostar or grand Cozumel resorts are farthest away and offer more exclusivity.

Jamaica offers everything you mention, from pristine clear waters and beautiful sunsets on 7 miles of beach in negril to the many centers on north coast:eg,Montego bay, which offers a variety of hotels in size and in accommodations, same is true for Ochi Rios. it also contains something for nature lovers, rivers(rafting, river tubing) and mountains for hiking, bird watching,it will feel like paradise,as there is so many things to do.Oh and transportation would also be in the package if you were to stay at the hotels there, not all offer that service though. But one thing for sure there is allot of fun and adventurous things to do.
