It is a 865 ft. granite formation in northeast Wyoming,it looks like a giant stump. the legend the local Indians tell say the marks on it came from a giant grizzly trying to climb and get a Indian princess that was placed on top for protection from it.climbers are all the time climbing and trying to climb it, but the local Indians are trying to get people to stop it because it is sacred to them. so if you want to climb it, time is running out! go to national parks website or ones others have mentioned here including Wyoming's state and tourism site . (there is a plethora of info out there for it I'm sure)!

The geologic origin of Devils Tower is still being debated. However the most widely accepted explanation is that a column of magma intruded into the surrounding sedementary rocks and pushed them up. The magma never reached the surface (which is why there are no ash or lava flows in the surrounding areas). Gradually the sedementary rock was worn away by wind, water and other processes, leaving the more resiliant crystaline rock inside.
