I love my Mazda3, and I loved it from the moment I got into it to test drive. For power, agility, fun and style, no other small car I drove could compare. I tried to talk myself into saving a few bucks buying the sedan, but in the end, couldn't resist the looks of the 5-door. I've never for a moment regretted buying it, and the extra cargo space has definitely come in handy many times in the past year & a half that I've had it. All the little creature comforts that came standard with it really added up for me (like the giant glove compartment, center console storage, lumbar supports, door pockets and a decent-sounding factory-installed stereo).
The Versa & Yaris are much, much smaller than the Mazda3, and neither the Versa, Yaris or Corolla can compare on handling or power.
That said, I think it's important that each person make a list of the things that they want and need in a car and prioritize them before making a decision. How long you plan to keep a car makes a difference, too. If you drive a lot, then the little luxuries make a big difference. If it's just a grocery hauler, maybe agility & torque aren't such a big deal.

I looked at a Mazda3 when I was shopping for a car and actually found that the base model of a Mazda6 was less expensive. The Mazda3 is very nice and has many options but you may want to look around at the Nissan Versa & Sentra (a new one is coming for 2007), as well as the Toyota Corolla & Yaris.
Also give the Mazda6 a serious look, the 4 cylinder base version (which I bought), is nice, roomy, drives really well and is a practical & reliable car with much more room than the Mazda3.
