Is there such a thing? He has to make frequent trips to the vet to have his pads buffed. The hard skin is like a callus, but it smells like fungi. The vets have no clue. Is there something better to help him cure this? Any Sheltie owners out there experience this?

Are you POSITIVE he's not a distemper virus survivor???

(Did he ever have any type of 'cold' or transient vomiting/diarrhea as a puppy?)

P.S. If his regular vets have 'no clue'....they should have already offered to refer you to someone with more expertise in that area (i.e. a board-certified veterinary dermatologist.)

I have had quite a few Sheltie patients live well into their mid-teens. If they get good preventative medical care and were not poorly bred, they often will.

I have had three. Never experienced this. Two of mine had kidney related problems and passed away early. I am still very sad that I failed to recognize this. I thought it was just age. I discovered that Shelties only last about 9 to 11 years. Please watch your Sheltie and go to the vet when he/she reaches this age range. Ask for a check-up. They are wonderful animals.
