Cats tend to tolerate puppies more than adult dogs because they know they're just helpless babies. That being said, the puppy won't know what the cats are capable of, and may try a bit too hard to "play" with the cats. In this case, a cat can become quite nasty and do some damage to poor little puppy.
They say any dog that's been raised with cats will be fine with them. This isn't always true. I've heard of dogs being raised with cats from the time they were born, only to turn around and kill a cat as an adult. And the opposite can also be true. Some dogs who have never even seen a cat know to keep their distance as soon as they hear the hiss and see the claws. It just depends on the dog.
If you want to get an adult dog, go to any shelter. They do temperment testing on all animals to ensure their compatibility with other dogs, cats, and kids. If a dog shows even the slightest curiosity about cats, they recommend a no-cat home.
Whichever decision you make, good luck! We're planning on getting a dog soon, and we're anxiously awaiting that good old transitional period where our cat has to get used to the dog. We have two cats right now, but are rehoming the female because she's not good with dogs....we were told she was, but this isn't the case.

If you're getting a puppy, you should be fine. He'll grow up around the cats and learn what he can and can't do with them.
If you're getting an older dog, then you'll just have to ask the people you're getting him from if they know how he is with cats.
Other than that there's no way to know for sure how any dog, no matter what the breed, will be like.
I have a 5yr old Golden and about 2 years ago brought home a cat. He was pretty friendly to the cat but the cat didn't like him. Now, they're buddies.
My mom has a pit bull mix that's excellent with all animals. My mom has horses, cats, chickens, ducks, geese, and turkeys. Jack doesn't chase or bother any of them. He even protects them from other dogs that try to hurt them.

I would go to your local Human Society and see what dogs are available that have already been around cats and didn't have a problem. Generally puppies are more difficult than older dogs to introduce to cats. I have a dachshund and 3 cats and the dogs hates them. But my sister in law has a German Shepherd and a yellow lab and they get along fine with her cat.

In can be almost ANY type of dog, all depends on the dogs disposition. 20 years ago we owned a pit-bull, along with 3 cats. I think the dog (especially with this one cat named devil, who owned up to her name big-time) was more scared of them then they of him. Now have a golden retriever who's best friends with the 2 cats I now have.
In otherwords, In all breeds some do and maybe some don't . You just have to see with supervision over time. Shouldn't take long.

It's all in the training: Let the dog understand early on that the cats are not to be harmed and he won't. I had a Chesapeake Bay Retriever (like a lab only bigger!) who carried kittens in his mouth to the food bowl so they could eat. He was the best guard dog in town, nearly killed my ex when he tried to swing at me, and treated those cats like gold. It didn't take much 'training' either - I told him NO, loud, when he showed aggressiveness. Most dogs want to please you, so they'll learn quickly what makes you happy!

get a puppy and you will be fine try somthing that isnt looked at as a hunting dog and stay clear of greyhounds its in there blood to chase fluffy things. introduce the puppy to your cat slowly and if at any point you think they will not get along you should separate them starightaway. puppies do play alot!! and your cat my get the hump but your puppy will learn that the cat is in charge as too when it can play and when it doesnt want to good luck

Any dog will be fine. As long as you get the dog when it's a puppy, so it can grow up with the cats. Good luck!

no matter which kind of dog you get, they are either gonna hate each other or tolerate each other. They may eventually get used to each other and begin to like or love each other, but you have to make sure you love them both the same so they won't feel neglected. Keep them away from each other for a couple of weeks and by then they will have gotten used to each other's smell and know that the other one won't be going away anytime soon.

definite they could, yet in elementary words in gibberish. i'd be on my computer and my cat might want to leap onto they keyboard only for the relaxing of it and commence swatting at random keys. once i develop into chatting and that i develop into telling my pal 'ok i favor to get popcorn' yet earlier i might want to type 'popcorn', i have in elementary words written po-, my cat did his challenge and miraculously stepped on 'o' and the enter key suitable after. So it says i favor to get poo. I instructed my pal that my cat wrote that and he develop into like 'yeah suitable, poo eater'. LOL. authentic tale.
