You need a rectal thermometer because they won't break. Apply a lubricant to the end of the thermometer eg. vaseline then insert the tip of the bulb of the thermometer into the dogs anus and hold it in position for 2 minutes. Normal reading is between 38 and 39.5 degrees. It is better and easier to have another person at the head end of the dog to prevent him wriggling too much.

Yeah, you have to do it rectally with some kind of lubricant. BE SURE TO USE A RECTAL THERMOMETER. They are made of thicker glass so its safer for the dog. Also, as stated above, be sure to hold the dog up by placing a hand on his belly. HE WILL WANT TO SIT DOWN and you want to prevent that.
