Our Pediatrician said the sooner they get in the habit of having teeth brushed, twice a day, the better. It's more a "good habits" issue than anything. As soon as our children started teething, we got the little tooth-brushes that go over the finger. By one year, we were using a baby toothbrush. There are special enzyme-based tooth-pastes for small children that are safe to swallow. Once the child can spit, you can move to a normal toothpaste.

Toothbrush, but not toothpaste, they will swallow a lot of toothpaste. You can let them chew on the toothbrush (the child safety kind that can't go down the throat) and this will help clean their teeth and get them used to the toothbrush.

When my son was a year old I had what looked like a thimble with plastic bumps on it. I would just rinse it with water and then get in there. Once he started getting more teeth I bought the children's OrelB with kid friendly toothpaste and a small toothbrush.

I use a toothbrush and toothpaste made by Oral-B. It is totally kid safe. I bought it at Target. It is called Stages and it has the Baby Einstein characters on it. My 18 month old loves it!!

A toothbrush and kids toothpaste would be best. Even if he accidentally swallows a small amount, he'll still be ok. Toothpaste ensures getting the plaque off.

I would choose the wet cloth. My friend has a two year old and when he was a year old she took him to the dentist. He told her that toothpaste had too much flouride in it for him. She was told that she could start using kids crest when he was about 2 but not to before then.

if he's eating normal food already, better to use a toothbrush. my dentist always said that no real need to use toothpaste for such a young child. i only started using toothpaste (the kiddie kind) after my son turned 2. here we are nearly 2 years later and the dentist says he has perfect (unrotten) teeth.
